The Phantom of The Opera, Perins School, Alresford

Having seen some excellent youth company productions I was uncertain how a school would fare with such a demanding musical. I needn’t have worried as the 110-strong cast were an absolute credit to Director Marilitsa Alexiou, with each one giving first-rate performances.

Toby Cooper was a menacing and charismatic Phantom but even his fine vocals were eclipsed by those of Sophie Jarrett, as Christine Daae.

Buddy Wells and Freddie Besly delivered the humour as theatre owners Firmin and Andre, with Matt Roberts impressive as Raoul.

Sasha Wells was strong as Madam Giry, an often-underplayed part, but Sam Booth was a revelation as usurped diva Carlotta. Melanie Cotton led the excellent orchestra, sunken into the centre of the stage, and the sound, props, special effects (including the chandelier) and costumes were all stunning. The dancers, choreographed by Georgina Jarrett and Ellie Mills, also contributed significantly.

One word sums it up perfectly: Wow!
