All New Costume Set For 2018 season

Adrian Connell : Director Norfolk YMT summed up this wonderful production :” The music is epic in its grandeur and one of the most complex scores the young members of the Norfolk YMT have had to challenge them.Once I heard and saw the piece I was hooked on it and it has proved to be one of the best pieces of musical-theatre we have undertaken in 22 years.”

Battle of Boat Synopsis

Set in a seaside town on the English south coast in 1916. The carefree happiness of a group of young children is short-lived as they find themselves discovering more and more about the First World War that is unfolding around them. Their initial response, to join the army, is thwarted as they are inevitably each rejected for being too young. There is one exception however as William, the oldest of the group is enlisted and is sent to fight in France. The tale is of the persistent attempts that the children make to do whatever it takes to help their friend and their country, with weaving, powerful themes of rivalry, leadership and battle. The youthfulness of the cast, and of the nation’s young generation lost to the Great War, serve to make the scale and impact of the musical even greater. A real tearjerker.

The Battle Of Boat is an original musical by composer Ethan Lewis Maltby and lyricist Jenna Donnelly. Set during WW1, it follows the adventures of a group of children trying to find their place in a world at war. Heartwarming, funny, emotional and exciting, the musical is performed entirely by children aged 8 to 18.

Set in early 19th-century France, it is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child. Valjean decides to break his parole
and start his life anew after a kindly bishop inspires him by a tremendous act of mercy, but he is relentlessly tracked down by a police inspector named Javert. Benjamin Britten’s Little Sweep

Little Sweep   T T T T

Well done to Adrian Connell and the cast of Little Sweep who achieved a fab 4 star review for their production of Little Sweep at the Ed Fringe. This is not an mean feat if you look at the number of shows that barely scraped one or two stars together! Anyway, I have re-blogged the review below for all to read:

Little Sweep Review Edinburgh 2016

4 Star

Show details

Venue: Augustine Unmited Church

Company : Norfolk Youth Music Theatre

Running Time : 60 mins

Production: Adrian Connell( Director, Musical Director and Pianist)

Clean sweep as Norfolk Youth Theatre step up the musical ladder to present Benjamin Britten’s opera about a genteel family , re-enacting a family legend of how they saved one small child from a life going up the chimneys of big houses. The production has a mainly young cast who sing the opera after an opening scene when they hear a favourite tale in the nursery on a wet afternoon. The tale is that the girls of the house along with their cousins rescue Sam , a nine year old , who has been sold to Black Bob , a brutal sweep master, by his father in order to put food on the family table. This is Sam’s first day and he gets stuck up the first chimney he climbs.Once he is rescued and cleaned up he is smuggled out the next morning in the visiting family’s luggage. The opera is beautifully sung by the cast with Rowan , the nursery maid played by Isabella Pitman to the fore with some of the most challenging parts. This is a scaled down production for NYMT but what lacks in cast numbers it makes up by rising to the challenge of operatic singing.

Countdown to Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2016

Three days to go before I hit the road on my annual roadtrip to Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival. The population in Edinburgh triples if not more for the 3 weeks of the festival. Every venue and every building that can be used from the smallest to the biggest will have been turned to a stage for the duration ( including several churches !).

I shall be joining the Norfolk Youth Music Theatre group at the Riego street University accommodation. We have provided the costumes for their production of Benjamin Britten’s Little Sweep. It is an opera written for young people and quite challenging. The action of the opera takes place in the children’s nursery of Iken Hall, Suffolk in the year 1810.The NYMT performed this opera in 2007 at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in its original version. My son Callum who was then 14 played Johnny Crome . Callum is now 22 and has just graduated from LAMDA.This show definately brings back memories. This time around Adrian Connell, the director of NYMT, has set the action in 1940  and the children play a “dress up” in Victorian/Edwardian clothes and re-enact the Little Sweep.
I attended one of their rehearsals and they are sounding amazing! NYMT have always manage to achieve 4 and 5 * reviews at the Fringe. They are an award winning group and definately worth going to see.
